Voters in New Jersey’s Second Congressional District will face a new candidate for governor in the weeks ahead if Zack Mullock unseats U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew in the Tuesday election. Mullock, the mayor of Cape May, held a campaign event on Landis Avenue in downtown Vineland on Sunday to introduce his running mate, Gov. Mikie Sherrill, to a local crowd.
Before the governor arrived, Mullock addressed the audience with a warning from his mother. She told him not to talk about men's asses, a reference to President Donald Trump’s rhetorical style. Mullock said the group needs to move past that rhetoric. He stated that if Democrats win, they will end the war in Iran and eliminate tariffs. He identified empowering labor as the more difficult, long-term legislative goal.
Sherrill, a retired Navy helicopter pilot, arrived by driving up to the Democratic headquarters. She used her military background to describe her political approach. She said she is not a fixed-wing pilot who follows a glide path. Instead, she is a helicopter pilot who brings the aircraft in hot and slams it down. She told the crowd she is the other helicopter pilot in New Jersey, distinguishing herself from Rebecca Bennett.
The governor emphasized the need to hold the White House accountable and chart a path for working people. She declared an intention to flip the New Jersey House and Senate. Sherrill added that in 2028, Democrats will secure new leadership in the White House. That final comment drew loud applause from the outdoor gathering.
Sherrill came close to winning this specific district in the previous election cycle. She is seeking to maintain that momentum by securing the congressional seat for Mullock. The campaign event serves as a key stop for the Democratic ticket in this battleground area.
Mullock and Sherrill are scheduled to appear at additional campaign stops in the days leading up to the election. Van Drew is expected to hold similar rallies in the district. The election is set for Tuesday, with voters deciding the fate of the seat currently held by the Republican incumbent.
