Sunday’s match at Camp Nou pits the league leader against a chasing Real Madrid side seeking to reset its season.
Barcelona currently holds a six-point advantage in La Liga. A win would expand that margin to nine points. Real Madrid enters the fixture on a four-match winning streak. A victory would reduce the deficit to three points and halt a run in which the visitors lost six of the last seven meetings with their rivals.
Jose Mourinho, 63, returns to the venue for the first time in his second stint as Real Madrid manager. The Portuguese coach has previously overseen 27 matches against Barcelona and 17 El Clasicos in charge of the white side. Florentino Perez appointed him in 2010 to counter Pep Guardiola’s squad. His first tenure coincided with some of the most intense encounters in the modern history of the rivalry. Cameras will focus heavily on his tactical decisions from the touchline on Sunday.
Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s head coach, acknowledged the momentum behind his opponents. He stated that he expected Madrid to arrive with "a lot of confidence" and expressed high respect for Mourinho’s longevity in the sport. Flick noted that the team has only been together for about two months since players returned from the World Cup and international breaks. He described the current phase as an initial period of learning and analysis, calling it unfair to compare the squad to more established units.
Flick cited Tuesday’s 4-2 Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain as a learning opportunity. He said the team performed many things well but identified specific situations requiring improvement. He viewed the El Clasico as a chance to grow as a unit against one of the world’s best teams.
Both managers described the upcoming fixture as unique. Mourinho stated that recent form has no influence on the outcome of El Clasico. He added that the football world typically stops to watch the game and that he hopes for a high-quality contest in which his team secures a win.
The match is scheduled for Sunday at Camp Nou. Barcelona aims to extend its title lead, while Real Madrid looks to convert its recent positive run into a statement result against its chief rival.
