Ryleigh Schoonover is set to begin her collegiate basketball career at Fresno State. The former Clovis West star is entering her freshman season with the Bulldogs. She joins a program competing for a Pac-12 championship.

Schoonover spent four years at Clovis West High School. During that time, the Golden Eagles won 14 consecutive Central Section championships. That winning streak made title expectations a core part of the team culture. Coach Craig Campbell said the goal was to stay competitive every season. "We want to be good every year," Campbell said. "We're not going to win it every year, but we want to be knocking on the door every year."

Schoonover chose to stay in the Fresno area rather than attend a school outside the valley. She said wearing the local identity holds personal meaning. "To wear that valley 'V' on your chest, it's something different," Schoonover said. She noted that people outside the region often do not understand that sentiment.

Fresno State head coach Ryan McCarthy praised the recruit immediately. "In my opinion, Riley was the best player in the area for her class of 2026," McCarthy said. "Riley came in and proved that right away." He said her background in a dominant high school program prepared her for college expectations. "She played with a very good high school basketball program here, and all they did was win," McCarthy said. "And so, that's the expectation when she sets out on the floor."

Schoonover credited Campbell for preparing her for the intensity of college play. She said the standard of performance remains the same at both levels. "Everything is the standard," she said. McCarthy agreed that her experience in a championship environment readied her for the next step.

Fresno State begins its season against UC Merced in less than two weeks. Schoonover will play her first home game at the Save Mart Center. Campbell believes the player has not yet reached her full potential. "I think that's one of the things that's so exciting for Coach McCarthy and the staff is she's just scratching the surface on what a gifted player she could be for them," Campbell said.
