Google has begun distributing Enhanced Protection mode in its Android Messages app. This new tier sits above the existing Standard Protection level and requires users to manually activate it.

The update introduces three distinct tools. Scam Detection uses cloud-based Gemini models to analyze message threads and identify fraudulent intent from unknown senders. Google states this method handles sophisticated attacks more effectively than on-device checks. To preserve privacy, the app processes encrypted messages within Android's Private AI Compute system, a secure space that Google says remains private to the user.

Enhanced link protection combines the on-device Gemini Nano model with real-time web data. This feature evaluates unfamiliar links before a user taps them. It is currently available on Pixel 10 and newer devices, Samsung Galaxy S26 series phones, Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8 models, and other select hardware.

The update also redesigns warning alerts for links from unsaved contacts. These new notifications provide additional context and time for users to verify the sender before interacting with the link.

Users can enable the mode by navigating to Protection & safety in the app settings. The menu now lists three options: Enhanced protection, Standard protection, and No protection. The app labels the no-protection choice as not recommended. The feature appeared in the latest beta build, version 20261020_00_RC00.
