Tesla has begun manufacturing Optimus robots on a high-volume assembly line inside its Fremont factory. The company stated in its third-quarter shareholder letter that the units coming off this line are the first production-quality models it has ever built. Tesla added that the current manufacturing process has proven suitable for a commercial product.
The robot line occupies space that previously produced Model S and Model X vehicles until this spring. Tesla removed the old vehicle equipment in 46 days to create room for robot production. The facility is designed for an annual capacity of one million units. Elon Musk said on Wednesday's earnings call that most of the equipment required for that capacity is already installed in Fremont.
Musk indicated that weekly output will climb toward roughly 20,000 robots as the line ramps up. He described the growth pattern as a classic S curve, noting that the initial slope is shallow. The engineering team is currently refining the robot's artificial intelligence, electromechanical design, and reliability. Musk expects this work to be finished by the end of next year.
Tesla plans to start delivering Optimus to outside companies once the refinements are complete. The robots will handle dangerous, repetitive, and around-the-clock jobs. The company is solving a data problem that its car fleet does not face. Cars send real driving data from millions of vehicles to the AI team, but Optimus does not yet have a large fleet to generate that kind of training data.
Musk explained that a major difference between Optimus and cars is the lack of a vast fleet for gathering training data. Tesla's solution is an Optimus Academy where 10,000 to 20,000 robots will practice a wide range of tasks. These robots will feed what they learn into the next version of the model. Every unit produced at Fremont will serve as a source of training data.
Hardware upgrades are also scheduled for next year. Tesla plans to install its AI5 chip into Optimus. Musk said a new video will arrive within one or two months showing the robot completing tasks driven by AI rather than preprogrammed motions. He criticized rival humanoid demos for running only scripted routines that would not hold up in the real world.
