Elena Rybakina advanced to the Ningbo Open final on Friday after defeating sixth seed Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5. The victory secures the defending champion a spot in Sunday's match, where she aims to win the tournament for the second consecutive year. The result comes as the world number one prepares for the WTA Finals later this month.
Rybakina's path to the final was not straightforward. She arrived in the eastern Chinese city following a rough run that included a heavy loss in Beijing and a withdrawal from Wuhan due to a foot injury. In this semifinal against the 13th-ranked Shnaider, the world number one displayed flashes of form mixed with periods of inconsistency. She struggled to close out games, particularly on her own serve.
The first set ended only after Rybakina converted her 11th set point. She described the final game as a long struggle where she hit good first balls but failed to finish. "It was an important game, and it was a long one," Rybakina said. "I was playing the first balls really well, but I couldn't close the game .. so many opportunities, but I'm glad it went my way."
The second set mirrored the first. The 27-year-old Grand Slam winner continued to face issues with first-serve accuracy. She broke Shnaider's serve to take a 4-3 lead but was then broken to love in the 10th game. Rybakina responded with aggressive hitting to regain the lead in the next game. She then served with greater confidence to close out the match in two sets.
Shnaider's left-handed style created specific tactical challenges for Rybakina. The Kazakh athlete noted that switching patterns during rallies was difficult against a left-hander. "It's always difficult to play against left-handers. We don't have so many on the tour," Rybakina explained. "I needed some time.. but I'm happy I managed to win in two sets."
Rybakina will face unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez in Sunday's final at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre. Fernandez earned her place by defeating Czech player Marie Bouzkova by the same 6-3, 7-5 scoreline in the earlier semifinal. Fernandez is also left-handed, presenting a similar stylistic test for the world number one.
The final marks the next stop in Rybakina's schedule. She plans to play the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week before starting her defense of the WTA Finals title at Indian Wells on November 8. Regarding the prospect of winning back-to-back titles in Ningbo, Rybakina remained measured. "It's never easy," she said. "Of course I'll try to do my best. I'm going to fight and give my all tomorrow."
