Google allows AI Mode to use Gmail and Photos for ads
A privacy update removes the barrier keeping personal account data out of ad targeting for users who connect their files to Search tools.

Google updated its privacy terms on October 16 to allow advertising based on data from Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos. The change applies specifically to users who have connected these services to AI Mode and other Search tools. Android Authority first identified the shift in the policy language.
Previously, the company pledged not to use data from these accounts for personalized ads. The revised text now includes an exception. It states the commitment holds unless a user chooses to make their data available to other Google services that support personalized ads. This change affects people using the Personal Intelligence feature. That feature lets AI tools access a person's own content to provide tailored answers.
Under the new rules, connecting personal files to Search tools means those files can also shape the ads a user sees. Google describes specific limits on this access. Advertisers do not receive direct access to the contents of a user's Drive, Gmail, or Photos. They also do not get personally identifying details such as a name or email address. The company says it will not show ads based on sensitive categories, including race, sexual orientation, religion, or health.
The policy explains that users may allow services like Search or Gemini Apps to reach data from other products. This access is intended to provide a more personalized experience. The terms note that Search may process permitted data to personalize content, including ads. For example, a user who searches for mountain bikes in Search might later see ads for sports equipment on YouTube.
The update broadens how ad personalization works for connected users. The text states that depending on settings, Google may show personalized ads based on interests, activity, or personalized content from its services. This mechanism links the data users share for better AI answers with the data used to target their advertising.
Users who want to keep their personal data out of ad targeting have options. They can select which apps to disconnect from Search's Personal Intelligence features. Alternatively, they can switch off Personalized Recommendations altogether. This can be done through the Search Services Personalization settings page. The choice to connect files for better AI results now carries the implication that those same files may influence ad selection.
