Apple's iPhone Duo is now available, but the device does not support its headline features out of the box. To write on the screen or charge the phone at its maximum speed, buyers must purchase separate hardware. The total cost for the recommended add-ons reaches $249, according to a guide published by 9to5Mac.

The most notable gap is stylus support. Apple Pencil compatibility is a first for the iPhone, allowing users to sketch and take notes on both the outer and inner displays. Apple stated that the design mimics the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook. However, the feature does not work until the iOS 27.2 update arrives next week. Only the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is compatible, and it is currently priced at $69, a reduction from its standard $79 price tag.

Charging speed also depends on external power. The phone can reach 50 percent battery in roughly 20 minutes, but only with a high-wattage adapter. The box includes a USB-C cable but no charger. Many owners may have 20W adapters, but 9to5Mac suggests the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max at $34, or an Anker 100W USB-C charger with a five-foot cable at $29.

Additional costs apply for protection and connectivity. Apple's own Folio with Kickstand sells for $129, while the standard case costs $79. Third-party alternatives include the SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case for $29 and the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro for $39. For navigation, the ESR MagSafe Car Mount is listed at $19, down from $29. This accessory allows the phone to clip to an air vent while displaying directions on the larger screen.

The new StandBy mode offers another reason to buy accessories. When the phone stands upright, it can display smart home controls without charging. Two specific views, Home Camera and Home Modular, allow users to monitor security feeds. 9to5Mac recommends the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 or the eufy 4K camera at $69 to utilize these features.

A separate recommendation is for audio equipment. AirPods Pro 3 are suggested for users with older models, with a focus on noise cancellation for work environments. Amazon currently lists them for $199, down from $249. The source concluded by asking readers which of these items they intend to purchase.
