4 Goals: Manchester United's Top Scorer Trails Eight Premier League Players

A 3-0 loss to Bournemouth confirmed the Red Devils' worst start in 40 years, exposing a squad that lacks a consistent goalscorer and a clear tactical identity.

Manchester United finished the weekend with their worst league start in four decades.

The club suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, a result that extended a poor run of form. This loss placed the squad in ninth place in the Premier League table. The performance triggered an immediate reaction from the supporters at Old Trafford.

The numbers in attack tell a stark story. Bryan Mbeumo leads the team with four goals this season. Eight other players in the league have scored more than him. Every one of those eight strikers would currently start for Manchester United. This gap highlights a severe lack of regular goal threat for the Red Devils.

The club has struggled to find a reliable forward since Cristiano Ronaldo left in November 2022. Rasmus Hojlund was signed to replace the Portuguese star but was sent back to Italy. Benjamin Sesko arrived in the summer of 2025 as a major investment, yet injuries have limited his impact. The team has also experimented with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in central roles, but both players are naturally wingers. This has left the squad without a dedicated number nine.

The crisis extends beyond the pitch to the leadership. The Glazer family has owned a stake in the club since 2005. In the 13 years since that acquisition, United have made 75 signings. The current management includes CEO Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox. Defenders like Lisandro Martinez have publicly criticized this group for a lack of investment in the squad. The arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS Group two years ago brought new ownership and promises of a rebuilt training ground, but on-field results have remained flat.

Tension also exists within the dressing room. Bruno Fernandes, the team's playmaker, was booed by fans on Sunday. He did not play in the match against Bournemouth but was targeted for his earlier criticism of manager Michael Carrick. Fernandes had complained about the tactics used in a recent Champions League loss to Como. At 32, he is the standout performer for the team, yet his relationship with the fans and the club hierarchy is now strained. Reports suggest the Saudi Pro League and Galatasaray have both shown interest in signing him.

The club also failed to sign a left-back during the summer transfer window. Lewis Hall of Newcastle United was linked with a move throughout the season, but no deal was finalized. This lack of depth in defense contributed to the frustration among the players. The tactical approach of the team has been a source of confusion for years. Past managers like Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal faced player revolts over their styles. Current manager Michael Carrick has also faced doubts about his methods.

Former defender Gary Neville described the squad as having unprofessional elements during a broadcast on Sunday. He stated that a few players are not that professional. The team needs a defined style and personality to reconnect with its loyal fanbase. The fans, who had historically been patient, are now demanding change at every level of the club.
