A 36-year-old British woman died in the Bahamas on Tuesday after a strong ocean current carried her away from her two sons during a snorkeling trip. The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation into the incident, which occurred near the southern tip of North Bimini.
The woman was in the water with her husband and their children when the current grabbed both boys. According to the police statement, she tried to reach them. As she moved through the water, the current pulled her away as well. Rescuers later pulled the children from the sea. They survived the incident.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a call shortly after 10 a.m. that day. The call reported that an unresponsive woman was at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time officers arrived, medics had already transported her to a local clinic. A doctor pronounced her dead there despite efforts to resuscitate her.
Police noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after her rescue from the water. The force said foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the case. A spokesperson said their thoughts are with the family. Officials are currently in contact with local authorities to provide support to the deceased's family.
North Bimini is the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The island group sits between Andros and Miami. It is known for its connection to Ernest Hemingway and a major shark research center.
