BYD is set to introduce a new ultra-luxury electric sedan that will make its global debut in the United Arab Emirates. Yangwang general manager Hu Xiaoqing confirmed this week that the launch will happen outside the company's home market of China. The company has not yet provided a specific day for the event, but the car is expected to appear officially this month. This marks a significant move for a brand traditionally known for affordable vehicles.
The new model is positioned as the company's largest and most luxurious electric sedan. Its design is comparable to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, with local reports suggesting a length of approximately 5,500 mm. Rumored pricing starts in the 2 million yuan range, which converts to about $300,000. This price point places the vehicle well above the current Yangwang lineup. The brand's existing electric sedan, the U7, starts at 658,000 yuan or roughly $98,000. The highest-priced mass-produced vehicle in the current range is the U8L plug-in hybrid SUV, which starts at 1.45 million yuan or about $217,000.
Several executives are involved in bringing this new flagship to market. Hu Xiaoqing released images of the prototype undergoing testing last month. Although the car was disguised, its shape and size aligned with high-end executive sedans like the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. Zheng Yu, Yangwang's executive general manager, stated that the car will feature unprecedented disruptive technology. He did not provide specific details on what that technology entails, leaving much of the specification list to speculation until the official reveal.
The vehicle appears to be the first to use several new technologies from the parent company. It was displayed at a BYD Flash Charging station, which suggests it will support megawatt flash charging. The sedan also features rear-hinged coach doors, a first for the brand. Furthermore, reports indicate it will be the first model to utilize solid-state batteries. Executive vice president Stella Li told Carwow.es last month that BYD's first solid-state battery vehicle would debut in 2027. This timeline aligns with the current development stage of the sedan.
BYD has expanded its product lineup significantly in recent years. The company now sells a wide range of vehicles, from entry-level electric cars to three-row flagships, pickups, and supercars. The brand structure includes three sub-brands: Denza, FangChengBao, and Yangwang. The Dynasty and Ocean families operate under the main BYD name. Yangwang sits at the top of this hierarchy and serves as a showcase for the company's newest engineering achievements. Earlier models in this segment used the quad-motor e4 platform, which produces 1,300 horsepower, and the DiSus-X intelligent body control system.
The stakes for this launch are high for the manufacturer. BYD is aiming directly at established ultra-luxury marques such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Mercedes-Maybach. This is a notable step for a company best known for affordable options like the Seagull, a small hatchback that sells for under $10,000 in China. The success of this sedan will determine how far the company can push into the premium segment. The decision to debut the car in the UAE first suggests a strategic focus on markets where high-end electric vehicles are already gaining traction.
