Spotify forces shared plan users to meet for QR scans
Members must verify their address in person within seven days or lose access for a year.

Spotify is tightening its grip on Family and Duo subscriptions by requiring members to physically meet for verification. The company now demands that users scan a QR code on the plan manager's device within seven days. This move enforces a long-standing rule that all members of a shared plan must live at the same address.
The deadline is strict. If a member fails to scan the code in time, Spotify will downgrade their account to the free tier. The user will also be barred from joining any other Duo or Family plan for 12 months. Spotify's support documentation confirms the new requirement, which followed user reports on Reddit.
The policy targets a specific gap in revenue. Goldman Sachs analysts noted in an October 15 report that many family plan users are friends sharing costs rather than actual household members. The report, titled "Music in the Air: 10 Years On," stated that "a meaningful share of family plan users are not actual household members." Analysts suggested that tightening verification offers "additional monetization upside."
The enforcement mechanism relies on physical proximity. Users cannot complete the check remotely. They must be in the same location as the plan manager to scan the address-verification code. This step ensures that the digital account matches the physical residence claimed by the primary subscriber.
The rule applies to all members of a shared plan. The primary manager initiates the process by generating the QR code. Secondary members must then present themselves in person to complete the scan. The seven-day window begins once the prompt is sent to the user's account.
The change affects how households manage their subscriptions. Families with members away at college or working on the road may face logistical hurdles. The policy does not provide a remote alternative for verification. Users who miss the deadline face a full year of exclusion from shared plans.
Spotify has not announced a grace period for new sign-ups. The QR scan requirement applies to existing members of Family and Duo plans. The company aims to align its billing model with the residency rules it has maintained since the launch of these subscription tiers.
