Lawrence resident Carlos Candelario, 36, was charged on Wednesday with kidnapping, witness intimidation, identity fraud, and drug trafficking and possession.
The arrest followed a police operation at a motel on Main Street in Tewksbury. Officers received a call around 2:45 a.m. regarding a guest with an active warrant from Lawrence District Court. Due to the suspect's criminal background, a regional SWAT team assisted in serving the warrant. Candelario was taken into custody at approximately 6 a.m.
During the search of the room, officers discovered two women who were being held against their will. Investigators later confirmed that Candelario had threatened the victims to stop them from speaking with law enforcement. The man also possessed nearly 50 grams of cocaine at the time of his arrest.
Police noted that Candelario used a false identification document to secure the motel room. This discovery led to the additional charge of identity fraud.
Candelario is scheduled to appear in Lowell District Court on Thursday for his arraignment. No further details have been released regarding the case.
