The family of the Duchess of Sussex is currently grappling with a renewed legal inquiry into the digital devices of the duchess’s father. Thomas Markle Sr, who has long been estranged from his daughter, is now the subject of an investigation in the Philippines following claims that he possessed a large volume of child sexual abuse imagery. The development adds a layer of complexity to an already strained family dynamic and has prompted Meghan Markle to address the public for the first time regarding specific details about prior police contact.

The current dispute stems from allegations made by Markle Sr’s son, Thomas Markle Jr. The younger Markle told detectives in Cebu that he discovered hundreds, or potentially thousands, of such images on computers and phones stored in boxes at his father’s former residence. These devices had been kept at the home until Markle Sr departed for the United States in May. The father has consistently denied the accusations, describing them as sick lies while he recovers from the amputation of his left leg in a Florida rehabilitation facility.

In a statement released through a spokesperson, the Duchess of Sussex disclosed that she was informed of disturbing allegations against her father in 2018. She explained that a letter sent to the Metropolitan Police and its Royalty and Specialist Protection unit was shared with her shortly after her wedding. She noted that she was assured the claims were being investigated. She stated that her decision to limit contact with her father and to prevent him from seeing her children was driven entirely by a desire to protect them. She expressed her hope that justice would be fully served and that the safety of children would remain the central priority.

The Metropolitan Police has indicated it is conducting internal inquiries to determine if officers from the specialist unit were responsible for passing the letter to the duchess. Sources close to the situation suggest that Meghan refrained from speaking publicly in 2018 to avoid jeopardizing any future investigation or exposing herself to legal action. The force has clarified that it has not previously investigated Markle Sr and is not currently conducting an active inquiry into him.

Meanwhile, officials in the Philippines have confirmed that the matter is being actively handled by a taskforce specializing in human trafficking and child sexual exploitation. The national police have secured the computer in question for a full digital forensic examination. The interior secretary expects to have the results within one week. The FBI has also stated it will support local authorities and investigate any related federal violations of US law.

Markle Sr’s daughter, Samantha Markle, has defended their father by accusing Thomas Jr of fabricating lies for financial gain. She noted that the claims emerged days after their father cut off her funds and highlighted that the computers were out of his possession for two years, suggesting potential tampering. Markle Sr has remained estranged from his daughter since missing her wedding on health grounds and has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The next phase of this case will likely hinge on the forensic analysis of the seized digital devices. As the Philippine authorities compile their findings, the family continues to navigate the public and legal fallout of these serious allegations.
