The Idaho Supreme Court will hear arguments Monday on the conviction of Lori Vallow Daybell for three murders. She faces three life sentences in the state for the deaths of her children, Joshua "JJ" Vallow and Tylee Ryan, and Tammy Daybell.
JJ was 7 years old and Tylee was 16 when they went missing in 219. Their bodies were discovered buried on rural Idaho property owned by Chad Daybell, Vallow Daybell's husband. Tammy Daybell was the wife of Chad Daybell. Vallow Daybell married Chad weeks after Tammy's death.
Her legal team argues the lower court denied her a speedy trial. They also contend the judge improperly rejected their chosen attorney due to a conflict of interest. That lawyer had represented both Vallow Daybell and her husband. The defense further claims jurors should not have heard evidence about separate shootings in metro Phoenix.
Vallow Daybell maintains doomsday religious beliefs. She has stated that individuals in her life were possessed by evil spirits. Chad Daybell, an author of religious novels, received a death sentence for the three Idaho killings.
The Arizona connection involves two other victims. Charles Vallow, Vallow Daybell's estranged husband, was shot dead in Chandler in July 2019. Her brother, Alex Cox, fired the shot. Investigators later questioned his self-defense claim. Cox died from a blood clot in his lungs before trial.
Nearly three months after Charles Vallow's death, a shooter fired from a Jeep at Brandon Boudreaux. Boudreaux is the ex-husband of Vallow Daybell's niece. He survived a gunshot wound in Gilbert. Prosecutors say Cox was the shooter in that incident as well.
Vallow Daybell holds two life sentences in Arizona for conspiring to kill Charles Vallow and Boudreaux. She has appealed those convictions separately. The Arizona case focused on the motive to collect life insurance money and marry Chad Daybell.
