Storm Boelo is bringing sustained winds of 80mph and heavy rain to northern Britain, causing widespread travel disruptions and threatening further power outages. The weather system is the second named storm of the season to strike the UK.

The Met Office issued an amber warning, its second most severe level, for Scotland and northern England down to Carlisle. This warning is in effect from 9pm on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday. A separate amber warning covers the north-east of Northern Ireland from 9pm on Saturday to 10am on Sunday. Forecasters urged residents to stay indoors due to the risk of flying debris and crashing waves.

Storm Austen hit the south-west of England on Friday and is now moving eastward. At its peak, 31,000 homes in the region lost electricity. By Saturday morning, more than 3,700 homes remained without power, according to the National Grid. The Met Office cautioned that similar outages could occur in the northern areas currently under amber warning.

TransPennine Express has advised passengers to avoid all but essential travel on Saturday and Sunday. Avanti West Coast strongly urged riders not to travel north of Preston on Sunday. Ferry services also face widespread disruption due to the severe conditions.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill identified the winds as the primary concern. He noted that strong gusty winds will affect Northern Ireland, northern England, and Scotland, strengthening toward the evening. Temperatures will remain slightly above the seasonal average, but the combination of wind and rain will create unpleasant conditions.

Boelo’s winds are expected to peak from Saturday evening onward. The wet weather should clear overnight in many parts of the UK, though rain will continue to affect Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham addressed the summer's record wildfires in a summit on Friday. He warned that the UK could face a winter of greater flooding. Burnham stated that the government is living in a world where unexpected events are becoming more common.
