Marisa Tomei joined Liam Neeson in the action film "The Mongoose," which opens in theaters on October 30. The project marks a new collaboration between the two actors, with Tomei stepping into a supporting role for Neeson, who is 74 years old.
Tomei, 61, plays Tara, the ex-wife of Ryan "Fang" Flanagan. Flanagan is a decorated Special Forces soldier returning from Afghanistan. Throughout the movie, the character leads a high-speed car chase while facing false charges. Tara’s life is complicated by her current engagement, which triggers the central conflict of the story.
Tomei described the casting process in a phone interview. She stated that joining the project was a "no-brainer." She noted that Neeson is a legend in the industry, known for his talent and kindness. She added that she was welcomed with open arms by Neeson and his long-standing team of collaborators.
The character of Tara suffers from a version of PTSD, mirroring the experience of her ex-husband. The film’s setting is Georgia, a location chosen because it serves as a hub for military personnel and Special Forces training bases. However, the actual filming took place in multiple locations in Australia.
Tomei explained that Tara has a specific type and has experienced rocky relationships in the past. Despite their separation, Tara and Fang share a deep, reciprocal love that has lasted since high school. When Tara’s fiancé reveals hidden traits, she calls Fang because she trusts him. This action sets off the chain of events that drives the film's plot.
The script balances the trauma of war with entertainment value. Tomei described the stunts as incredible and noted that the movie contains a lot of humor. She emphasized that the action is intense and fun. Tara remains in Fang’s corner, seeking the freedom he can obtain. The two maintain a soulmate connection that persists through the narrative's events.
"The Mongoose" is scheduled for a wide release in theaters on October 30. The film features a high-speed chase sequence as its primary action element. Neeson leads the cast, supported by his usual group of actors and crew members who have worked with him for decades.
