Viewers of the crime drama Nocturne watched as the connections between three main characters tightened in the second episode. The story revealed that Jurek Walter, a serial killer, has been linked to Jonah Lynn and Saga Bauer for years. This history explains their current struggle to catch him.
The episode used flashbacks to show Jonah’s arrival in Fairhaven. He came from Philadelphia to help his friend Sam Mendel with a case. Sam is a police officer who struggles with drinking and home violence. Saga is Sam’s daughter with Denise Bauer, a Haitian immigrant with schizophrenia and dementia. Jonah became a father figure to Saga after meeting her in Fairhaven.
Years later, Jonah lost his wife Rebecca and daughter in an accident. The details of that accident have not been revealed yet. Jonah worked the Jurek Walter case with Sam. During an interrogation, Sam was drunk and got angry when Jurek mentioned Rebecca’s name. Jonah now believes Jurek helped Rebecca disappear while he was in custody.
A man named Michael Frost reappeared and confirmed that Jurek is still active. Frost said he was with a woman named Becky who had the same eye condition as Rebecca. He also mentioned his sister Felicia, who is still missing. This information pushed Saga to go undercover at the psychiatric hospital.
Saga committed herself to the hospital using a fake diagnosis of schizophrenia. She went by the name Esther Desjardins. Jurek tried to manipulate a new nurse named Gary by slipping a note into his pocket during a staged choking incident. Gary is one of the few staff members who has not been charmed by the killer.
Another nurse, Karl, is falling for Jurek’s friendly act. Jurek can now force Karl to work for him because Karl broke the law by helping the killer. If Jurek tells the truth, Karl could lose his job and go to prison. This dynamic mirrors the relationship between Dracula and his servant.
Saga found a strange symbol in a padded room at the hospital. The symbol is a circle with a double-pointed arrow cutting it in half. Jonah saw the same symbol etched into trees in the woods near his wife’s hunting cabin. He has felt that he, FBI Agent Quinn, Saga, and Nate are being watched while setting up their headquarters.
The episode highlights the genre tropes of the show. It features tragic backstories, a mastermind villain, and kind-hearted cops. Jonah keeps saying he feels watched, which fits the theme of not seeing the forest for the trees. The next episode will likely focus on the conflict between Stephen Graham and Zazie Beetz.
