Austin Reaves had to retrieve his signature headband from a fan in the stands on Sunday night after returning to the court late in the Lakers' 131-125 victory over the Raptors. The 6-foot-5 guard initially handed the accessory to a spectator behind the team's bench when he subbed out with 1:43 remaining, signaling his intention to sit for the final minutes of the game.
The plan shifted quickly when the Lakers' lead shrank from 15 points to single digits in the span of 20 seconds. Jaden Bradley converted an and-one layup that cut the Raptors' deficit to six points with 44 seconds left. Following that basket and a successful free throw, the deficit stood at five points.
Coach JJ Redick decided the reserve lineup was no longer sufficient to hold the lead. He called a timeout to sub in his main rotation players. Reaves, Matisse Thybulle, Walker Kessler, and Luka Doncic all entered the game simultaneously with 44 seconds on the clock to secure the win.
The move required Reaves to quickly regain his gear. The fan holding the headband appeared cooperative as Reaves took it back before taking the floor. Redick later stated he would not make the same substitution error again, noting he would keep players in the game if they were not ready to finish late in contests.
The Lakers finished the season segment with a 5-2 record. The win extended their control of the game, despite the late scramble to reset the lineup. Reaves remains the starting guard for Los Angeles, though the incident may prompt him to keep his headband secured until the final whistle.
