JB Smoove, the Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian, will deliver the keynote address at an industry gathering scheduled for Nov. 12 in Los Angeles. The event, organized by Variety and presented by City National Bank, aims to recognize the contributions of top entertainment business managers over the last year.

Smoove, known for his roles in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Saturday Night Live,” will participate in a conversation about his vision for modern storytelling. The discussion will cover his work in television, film, and branded entertainment. Beyond his on-screen performances, he founded Alternate Side Productions and First Darrin, a creative agency that develops comedic advertising content for various brands.

Media Cartographer Evan Shapiro will also speak at the event. He will discuss the impact of the expanding creator economy on the entertainment industry. Shapiro, a Webby Award-winning creator and producer who has won Emmy and Peabody Awards, will join Variety co-editor-in-chief Cynthia Littleton for the segment.

The breakfast will also honor Arnie Herrmann with the Variety Business Managers Elite Award. The recognition acknowledges his career and philanthropic work, including his support of the Jenna’s Rainbow Foundation, the Irving Penn Foundation, and his long-standing board service at MusiCares. Award-winning actress Candice Bergen will present the award to Herrmann.

JaHan Wang, head of Entertainment & Sports Banking at City National Bank, noted that the bank has worked with entertainment business managers for decades. “We’ve seen firsthand the difference a great advisor can make,” Wang said. He added that the bank is honored to return as the presenting sponsor for the event.

Dea Lawrence, co-president and publisher of Variety, stated that business managers are a vital part of the entertainment ecosystem. She expressed pleasure at partnering again with City National Bank and congratulated Herrmann on receiving the Business Manager of the Year award. Supporting partners for the event include Citrin Cooperman, Content Partners, Venable LLP, and Willkie.

The gathering brings together individuals featured in Variety’s Business Managers Elite issue. The event serves as a platform to celebrate the professionals who help talent build lasting careers in the entertainment field.
