Apple confirms inner screen defects in early iPhone Duo units
Owners report hinge line fractures within days of purchase; company advises affected users to contact AppleCare for replacement.

Apple has formally acknowledged a defect affecting the inner display of its new foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo. The company issued a statement on Wednesday confirming that a small number of units are experiencing screen failures. Apple advised customers with damaged devices to contact AppleCare to arrange a replacement.
The iPhone Duo went on sale on October 23, marking the first major hardware release under the leadership of CEO John Ternus. Despite the high price point, which starts near $2,000 and exceeds $3,000 for top configurations, initial sales were strong. However, online posts from early buyers have documented cracks appearing along the central hinge line within days of use.
Jesse Dalton, a resident of Frisco, Texas, purchased a 512-gigabyte model on launch day. He paid approximately $800 after an AT&T trade-in, bringing the effective cost to around $2,200. Dalton described pushing against resistance after attaching a protective case, only to hear a loud pop as the screen fractured. The device failed before he completed the initial setup process. A local Apple Store provided him with a replacement unit within 30 minutes.
Roneshia Smith reported a similar failure less than 24 hours after buying the phone as a graduation gift for her wife. She described the device as difficult to unfold from her nightstand. When she forced it open, she heard a cracking sound she compared to breaking an egg. Apple Store staff informed her that the device could not be repaired and required a full replacement. Due to current stock availability, Smith remains uncertain when she will receive the new unit.
Lance Ulanoff, editor at large for TechRadar, analyzed the hardware involved in the failure. He noted that the folding screen assembly includes an OLED panel, glass, a plastic covering, and a mechanical hinge. Ulanoff identified the ultra-thin glass as potentially the most fragile component. He expressed surprise at Apple’s swift acknowledgment of the issue, describing the response as unusual for the company. Ulanoff has used the device for a week and a half without incident and views the problem as a minor blip rather than a widespread failure.
Ulanoff recommends that owners with damaged devices make appointments at Apple Stores rather than walking in without one. He urged affected customers to return to the retailer immediately to resolve the matter. The reports of screen failures have emerged as Apple prepares for an upcoming product event in Los Angeles, where the company is expected to unveil a new touchscreen laptop.
The majority of early users report a positive experience, and developers are updating applications to utilize the unique design. However, the visible nature of the screen cracks has drawn attention to the challenges of introducing a new form factor to the mass market. Apple’s decision to offer replacements rather than repairs suggests a focus on maintaining customer satisfaction during this launch phase.
