Anthropic is preparing for a public listing expected to occur this year, with market valuations potentially reaching $2 trillion. This anticipated move is set to create a significant financial windfall for the company’s investors, ranging from early-stage venture capitalists to later-stage institutional backers. Even before the official IPO, the stakes held by key financiers have already accumulated into multi-billion dollar positions based on the company's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion.

The trajectory of these investments highlights the explosive growth of the AI sector. Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, entered the picture during the 2021 Series A round when the startup was valued at $461 million. According to PitchBook data, his initial investment has matured into a roughly 1% ownership stake. At the current private valuation, this holding is already worth nearly $10 billion, positioning him for substantial further gains if the IPO proceeds as projected.

Later-stage participants have also reaped significant rewards, though their entry points varied considerably. Iconiq, an investment firm, committed $6 billion to Anthropic last year when the valuation stood at $183 billion. That late-stage bet has appreciated to $17 billion and could double once the company goes public. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D, has invested over $1 billion over time, resulting in a stake currently valued at $14 billion.

Sequoia Capital entered the market more recently, backing the AI lab earlier this year when the valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. Its $3 billion investment secured approximately 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial capital. Meanwhile, Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C. The firm subsequently added another $400 million, creating a position now worth billions. It is noted that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a separate venture capital firm.

Perhaps the most dramatic multiple belongs to Spark Capital, the only known VC firm with a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C, a round valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned by more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. As the company moves toward its public debut, these figures underscore the profound wealth creation occurring within the leading AI labs.

The upcoming IPO will serve as the final catalyst for these holdings. While the private market has already recognized the value of Anthropic’s technology and market position, the public listing is expected to provide the liquidity and visibility that will finalize these gains. For the investors named, the period between the last private round and the potential $2 trillion valuation represents a critical window of appreciation.
